The clock you are working against
Every UCCS clinical hour sits behind three documents: the Clinical Site Sheet you submit, the Affiliation Agreement between UCCS and the site, and the preceptor agreement letter. The start signal is an email from the Academic Services Professional for Graduate Nursing saying you are good to go, and anything logged before that message is not counted.
The slowest piece is usually the agreement. UCCS's handbooks put legal review of a new Affiliation Agreement at 6 to 8 weeks or longer when legal issues are involved, and now and then those issues cannot be resolved, which leaves the site unusable. Then there is the calendar. In 2026-27, fall runs Aug 24 to Dec 19, spring Jan 19 to May 15, and the 8-week summer semester Jun 14 to Aug 7. Hours count only inside the semester you are registered for, never in the gap between terms; the academic calendar page has the session dates.
Why a fast search looks different at UCCS
Speed at UCCS comes from choosing sites the paperwork can clear, not just clinicians willing to say yes. UCCS's 6-to-8-week figure is about building a brand-new agreement, so a clinic that already holds one, or that can route a new one to its signer quickly, changes your timeline more than anything else. UCCS cannot hand out its list of contracted sites, but the handbooks name the Clinical Practicum Coordinator as the person to ask for help, and a clinic can simply tell you whether it has hosted UCCS students before.
The second constraint is volume. UCCS allows no more than three new Affiliation Agreements per semester, except in Synthesis. A wide net of half-committed clinics can use up those slots on sites that never finish the process, so each submission should be a site you have already screened.

Your first 72 hours
- Confirm the course and hour countCheck your degree plan for the course, the semester dates and your cohort. A pre-Fall 2026 start means 630 practicum hours; a Fall 2026 or later start means 770.
- Tell the college where you standLet the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator know you are still searching, and ask what timing is realistic for your course this term.
- Work the shortest paths firstClinics that have hosted UCCS students, preceptors who worked with classmates in earlier rotations, and outpatient practices with a clear signer.
- Have the site sheet details readyKeep the preceptor's qualifications, the clinic's address and contract signer, and a fixed hour count on hand, so the sheet can go in the day someone agrees.
- Send the sheet at onceUCCS wants sheets well ahead of the semester whenever possible. Once that window has passed, the next best moment is immediately.
The math of a late start
A late start squeezes the same hours into fewer weeks. By simple arithmetic, a 110-hour course inside the 8-week summer semester comes to roughly 14 hours each week, and a 440-hour Synthesis spread across a full 16-week term is about 27.5 hours a week. Every week spent waiting on a signature pushes those figures higher.
Two more rules matter on a tight timeline. Time with a preceptor whose site sheet has not been processed stops counting after 16 hours, so a colleague covering for your preceptor needs a sheet of their own. And hours done while paperwork is still processing are lost, however good the experience was.

How we run a short-timeline search
A tight deadline is where a dedicated search pays off most. We reach out to clinicians in parallel rather than one at a time, screen each against UCCS's preceptor rules before anyone commits, and ask each site up front about its signer and how it handles student contracts, which is where new agreements tend to slow down. You put forward sites with a realistic path to signature instead of spending a limited slot on a long shot.
The moment a preceptor agrees, you get the Clinical Site Sheet details in the form UCCS asks for, hours stated precisely and the clinic's signer named. Questions UCCS students ask
Can I start clinical hours while the agreement is being signed?
No. UCCS's practicum handbooks say you may not begin until the contract with the agency and the preceptor letter are both signed, and hours done while paperwork is processed do not count. Wait for the Academic Services Professional's email confirming that you can begin.
Can I use the break between semesters to catch up on hours?
No. UCCS counts clinical hours only inside a fall, spring or summer term you are enrolled in, never before a term opens or in the gap after it closes. The handbooks tie this to professional liability and workers' compensation coverage, so plan the full load inside the term's dates.
Does a site with an existing UCCS agreement skip the wait?
The 6-to-8-week figure covers drafting and reviewing a first agreement with a site, so a clinic with one already in force should not need that review, though you still need a new Clinical Site Sheet and a signed preceptor letter. UCCS cannot share its contracted-site list, so ask the clinic and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator.
What if my new site cannot finish its agreement in time?
UCCS warns that a site whose legal problems stay unresolved cannot be used at all. If the semester is running out, talk with the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator and your course's lead faculty about your options, which may include an incomplete if you are passing the didactic work. A backup site in the pipeline is the best protection.
