When a missing preceptor pushes graduation back
At UCCS, one clinical course that slips a semester can move every course behind it, because Synthesis waits on the primary care rotations and hours never carry across the gap between terms. How one lost placement becomes a lost semester
UCCS builds its NP tracks in sequence. The primary care courses follow the full MSN core, and Synthesis comes last: NURS 6980 requires the earlier primary care courses, and you cannot enter it with an incomplete in NURS 6900, NURS 6915, NURS 6925, NURS 6950, NURS 6960 or NURS 6982. PMHNP students cannot enter NURS 6985 with an incomplete in NURS 6801 or NURS 6802.
So when a preceptor falls through and a course's hours spill into the next term, the course you planned for that term may have to wait, and the one after it too. Add the rule that hours never count between semesters, plus the limit of three new agreements each term, and a few weeks of paperwork delay can grow into a full semester. The UCCS limits that matter when you slip
These rules decide how far a delay can stretch. Most come from the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook (April 2024) and the 08/2026 practicum handbooks; the time limits come from the catalog and the DNP program pages.

Which hour total follows you
UCCS ties the hour total to your start term. Students who began before Fall 2026 owe 630 practicum hours and later starts owe 770, with 45 more in NURS 6730 on top of either. A slow semester does not change when you started. UCCS's public documents do not say which total applies if you leave for more than a year and reapply, so confirm with your degree plan and the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator before assuming either number.
Some UCCS documents still show 630 for everyone, as the 630 vs 770 page explains. If a revised plan stretches into a new academic year, ask which practicum handbook governs your remaining courses so your preceptors are booked for the right number of hours.
Getting back on schedule
- Talk to the college earlyTell the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator and your lead faculty as soon as a course's hours are at risk, while an incomplete is still an option and a clinical failure is not on the table.
- Ask for a revised degree planEvery student has an individual degree plan. A revised one shows which courses move and when, and UCCS limits how many you can request without a written reason.
- Line up two rotations at onceFind the preceptor for the delayed hours and the next course together, so the second placement does not become the next bottleneck.
- Start on Synthesis earlyIt is exempt from the three-agreement limit but carries the most hours, 360 or 440 by cohort. For FNP and AGNP, the 330-hour cap per preceptor or site outside major health systems means it usually needs more than one.
- Mind the summerThe summer semester is 8 weeks, so by simple arithmetic a 110-hour course there is about 14 hours a week. Plan a heavy course for summer only if a preceptor can match that pace.

Moves and leaves that compound a delay
Life events tend to arrive alongside a delay. If you move during the pause, remember that UCCS reads residency as physical location and treats you as a resident of whichever state was home at the time of your application; hours in a new state need approval and may be impossible outside the approved list. A leave of absence can protect your standing while you regroup, but the limits in the table above are real. The longer the pause, the more a clean restart depends on having a preceptor ready for the first course back, with the site sheet and agreement done before that term begins. If you work in health care, a pause is also a good time to ask about clinical hours at a different location of your employer, which UCCS allows with the coordinator's approval.

Questions UCCS students ask
How long can I take to finish my UCCS MSN?
The catalog sets a six-year limit for the MSN and notes that most students finish in three years full-time or four part-time. The DNP programs allow seven years. A single clinical delay rarely threatens those limits on its own, but long leaves and repeated courses add up.
Will a leave of absence hold my place in the program?
Under the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, you can extend a leave one semester at a time to a maximum of three, but staying away longer than a year means applying again. After a long leave the practicum handbooks require remediation before clinicals resume, so a leave buys time but adds a step on your return.
What if I fail the clinical part of a course?
UCCS treats a clinical failure as failing the whole course, and repeating the course means repeating its clinical hours. Two grades of B- or lower lead to dismissal. That is why an incomplete, arranged while you are passing the didactic work, is usually the safer route when a preceptor falls through.
Who updates my degree plan after a delay?
Degree plans sit with the Academic Services Senior Professional for Graduate Nursing, who also handles admissions contact. UCCS caps plan requests at three without a written reason, so gather your new clinical dates first and ask once with the complete picture.
Can I catch up on hours in the summer?
Only if you are registered for a clinical course that summer, since UCCS counts hours only inside a registered semester. UCCS does not publish which graduate clinical courses run in summer, so ask when you revise your degree plan. The 2027 summer term runs Jun 14 to Aug 7, just 8 weeks.
