Montana residents and UCCS's online NP programs
Montana is on UCCS's list, so you can apply from Billings, Bozeman, Missoula or a small town and complete your NP hours in the state. The Montana Board of Nursing aims its approval step at pre-licensure schools. Graduate programs, and the RN to BSN, can run clinicals in Montana without board sign-off, provided each student's license is valid there.

UCCS's programs from a Montana address
Both of UCCS's online lists include Montana, as the approved states guide shows. The one UCCS program outside your reach is the campus BSN, which serves people living in Colorado or moving there.

The Montana board's view of graduate clinicals
ARM 24.159.608 governs a different group entirely: out-of-state pre-licensure programs, which must win approval from the board or its executive director, through a detailed written request, before placing anyone in a Montana clinical setting. Graduate education sits outside that rule, and the board's FAQ says so in plain terms for graduate and RN to BSN programs alike.
The FAQ adds one condition, aimed at the school: the program must check that every student carries a license good in Montana, since the patients involved are Montanans. Faculty from other states need a Montana license only when their own work includes hands-on patient care; an instructor who confers with you and your preceptor does not. With no approval list involved, UCCS's own agreement process is what clears your site.
Licenses and practice authority
Montana began implementing the compact in January 2018. Its RN licensing page is explicit that a multistate privilege from another compact state is enough, with no separate Montana license required. On UCCS's side, compact-state hours call for a multistate license, and the RN license guide walks through the cases.
AANP rates Montana a full practice state. UCCS then looks for preceptors licensed where you do the hours who have practiced at least two years; NP preceptors must also be nationally certified and hold full prescriptive authority.
Small towns, long drives and UCCS's caps
Statewide names include Benefis Health System; Providence Montana, whose St. Patrick Hospital is in Missoula; Intermountain Health, with St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings; and Billings Clinic and Logan Health, now a single combined system. Think of them as landmarks rather than arrangements; any practice you use receives its own UCCS agreement.
Rural students should learn one UCCS limit early: the same preceptor or site can account for 330 of your FNP or AGNP hours at most, unless it belongs to a major health system. A single-clinic town can carry part of the program but seldom all of it, and the what counts guide spells out the caps.

The RN to BSN for Montana nurses
The RN to BSN asks for clinical contact hours in a single course, NURS 4450 Public Health Nursing, spent in a Montana community setting you arrange and faculty accept, away from your own unit and inpatient acute care. Under the board's FAQ, those clinicals skip board approval but carry the same license condition. Questions UCCS students ask
Must UCCS get Montana board approval before my clinicals?
The board's FAQ says graduate and RN to BSN clinicals fall outside it; its approval rule targets out-of-state pre-licensure programs. What it does require is a student license valid in Montana. Confirm your own plan with UCCS before the semester, since the college signs off on every site.
Does my UCCS site visitor need a Montana license?
The board's FAQ ties that requirement to hands-on patient care, and a visitor who only talks with you and your preceptor falls outside it. Each FNP or AGNP clinical course at UCCS includes one visit, in person or by phone, once you pass the midpoint; PMHNP visits are by phone.
Can I cross into Wyoming or Idaho for some hours?
Both are on UCCS's list, so the answer can be yes, once the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator approves and your license covers the state.
