From Cheyenne to Sheridan: UCCS nursing for Wyoming residents
If you live in Wyoming, UCCS's online nurse practitioner tracks and RN to BSN are open to you, and your clinical hours happen in Wyoming. Graduate programs skip Board approval there, but the school has to send the Wyoming State Board of Nursing written notice before each student's in-state clinicals and have a signed contract with the facility first.

What UCCS offers Wyoming nurses
Wyoming is one of the Mountain West states on UCCS's graduate NP roster, and it appears on the RN to BSN roster too. Because UCCS measures residence by where you physically live, a Wyoming address keeps your rotations in Wyoming. Details of the rule are on the approved-states page.

Wyoming's notice-and-contract rule, in order
Chapter 6 of the Board's education rules treats post-licensure study, which covers APRN and DNP programs as well as MSN and RN to BSN study, more lightly than pre-licensure schools. No Board approval is involved. Three things still need to line up for every student:
- Registration or SARAA school from outside Wyoming has to be on file with Wyoming's Department of Education or be approved under NC-SARA; UCCS takes part in NC-SARA by way of WICHE.
- Notice for each studentThe program writes to the Board ahead of each student's Wyoming clinical learning experience; a sample cover letter from the Board can serve as a template.
- A signed facility contractSchool and facility sign a written contract before clinicals start, and the program retains a copy the Board can review. At UCCS that contract is the Affiliation Agreement (how those work).
Wyoming keeps no approval list for graduate programs, so there is nothing to look UCCS up on; the obligation is a notice for each student. Ask UCCS how and when it sends Wyoming's notice so the timing suits your site's start date, and give the college your Clinical Site Sheet early.
Licensing and practice authority
Wyoming participates in the current Nurse Licensure Compact, in force since January 2018, so nurses there can hold multistate RN licenses. State law also contains the APRN Compact, though it will not operate before a seventh state joins, so APRN licenses stay single-state for now. AANP rates Wyoming as full practice. UCCS applies its usual preceptor standards in Wyoming. FNP and AGNP students may learn under an NP, PA, MD or DO holding a Wyoming license and two years in practice, and NP preceptors must carry national certification and full prescriptive authority. UCCS also recommends that no fewer than 200 of your hours be spent with an NP.
Cheyenne, Casper, Gillette and the open country between
Population is thin: roughly 103,000 people in metro Cheyenne, 81,000 around Casper and 48,000 in the Gillette micro area. Among hospitals anchoring local care are Sheridan Memorial Hospital in the north, Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Campbell County Health in Gillette, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, and Laramie's hospital, Ivinson Memorial, which is affiliated with UCHealth. They mark where clinicians work, not places that hold UCCS agreements.
Cheyenne lies close to Colorado's Front Range, yet for a Wyoming resident a clinic across the line is an out-of-state rotation: the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator must approve it, and your license must cover Colorado. With UCCS allowing three new Affiliation Agreements per semester outside Synthesis, one primary care practice able to carry a full rotation beats several partial ones. For NURS 4450, the Wyoming Department of Health is a sensible first stop.

Can I study in UCCS's online FNP track from Wyoming?
Yes. All of UCCS's graduate NP routes take Wyoming residents: the MSN tracks, the RN to MSN bridge route and the post-graduate certificate, with clinical hours in Wyoming. Eligibility by state is only the first test; UCCS reviews each application, so confirm admission requirements with the college.
Does UCCS need the Wyoming Board's approval for my clinicals?
No approval step applies to graduate programs. Wyoming instead expects the program to put the Board on written notice ahead of a student's in-state clinical experience and to have a signed facility contract. The program must also be either registered with Wyoming's education department or approved under NC-SARA.
Who sends Wyoming's notice to the Board, me or UCCS?
Wyoming assigns that duty to the school. Your part is handing UCCS a complete Clinical Site Sheet early so the Affiliation Agreement and the notice can be finished before hours begin. Ask UCCS how it times the Wyoming notice for your rotation.
I live in Cheyenne. Can I do my hours in Colorado?
Colorado is a UCCS-approved state, but since you live in Wyoming, hours there count as out of state. They require the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator's approval, and in a compact state like Colorado you need a multistate license.
