Studying with UCCS when you live in Kentucky

Kentucky is absent from both of the state rosters UCCS publishes, one for its online nurse practitioner programs and one for the RN to BSN. A Kentucky nurse set on UCCS would first have to make one of those states home, and the clinical hours would then happen there. Here is how Kentucky's rules compare as you weigh that step.

What each UCCS program means from Kentucky

Eligibility at UCCS hangs on your physical address when you apply: fourteen states qualify for NP study and twenty-one for the RN to BSN.

Kentucky's license, practice rules and board

Kentucky has been a compact state since January 2018, and eleven of UCCS's 14 NP states belong to the compact too. UCCS cares which license you hold: for hours in a compact state, the handbooks want a multistate license, and in the three non-compact NP states, Alaska, California and Nevada, a license issued by that state. AANP puts Kentucky in its reduced-practice group. Prescribing NPs there hold two physician agreements covering controlled and other drugs, absent a Board exemption, and new licensees meet employer-setting rules in their first year.

The Kentucky Board of Nursing takes a hands-off view of schools from elsewhere: it regulates only prelicensure programs based in Kentucky and asks no approval of outside programs, even ones running clinicals in the state. Its conditions attach to people instead, since faculty and preceptors supervising online graduate NP students there need both a Kentucky RN and a Kentucky APRN license. UCCS keeps hours inside its listed states, so this rule stays outside a UCCS rotation.

The experience Kentucky gives you

Many Kentucky nursing careers run through a few large employers: UofL Health and Norton Healthcare, UK HealthCare, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, and Baptist Health, whose footprint reaches into southern Indiana. Population gathers around Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and the Kentucky side of the Cincinnati metro. That RN background moves with you, but your UCCS preceptor has to be licensed in the state that hosts your hours.

If you relocate: UCCS's model in a listed state

Your application ties you to the state you occupied on the day you applied, so the move has to come first. Choose a state you intend to stay in, since relocating mid-program may interfere with completing it or with getting licensed in the new state, as the moving guide explains.

Once settled, you run the preceptor search, lining up a primary care or psychiatric clinician near your new home three to six months before the course. The college then receives your Clinical Site Sheet with exact hours, drafts an Affiliation Agreement and a preceptor letter, and only its "good to go" email starts your clock.

Questions UCCS students ask

Is UCCS's online FNP program open to me while I live in Kentucky?

Not under UCCS's current rules. UCCS's NP program pages restrict applications to residents of 14 listed states, and an applicant outside them cannot be admitted or placed. A move to one of those states would make you eligible to apply there, with the admission decision left to UCCS.

Could I do UCCS clinical hours at a Kentucky clinic?

No. UCCS allows hours only in states listed on its website, and any state besides your home one requires a sign-off from the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator. Kentucky is on neither UCCS list, so a Kentucky site would not qualify.

Is UCCS's RN to BSN open to Kentucky nurses?

Not from a Kentucky address. Of the RN to BSN's 21 states, two border Kentucky: Ohio and Virginia. Living in either would open the program, with NURS 4450 done at a faculty-approved community site in that state.

How long before a practicum should I be settled in my new state?

Give yourself two buffers. The handbooks want your preceptor search under way a quarter to half a year before the practicum course, and a first-time agreement with a new site can need roughly two months of legal review, sometimes more. Arriving early covers both.
