Ohio nurses and UCCS: the RN to BSN route
For an Ohio nurse, UCCS's door is the online RN to BSN: Ohio is on that program's 21-state list, and its one clinical course, NURS 4450 Public Health Nursing, would happen at an Ohio community site the student lines up. Ohio's statutes put no board approval in the way of programs from other states. UCCS's nurse practitioner programs admit from 14 states, and Ohio is outside that group.

Ohio's place on UCCS's lists
UCCS runs separate state lists, and only one of them includes Ohio. Admission is always UCCS's decision; here is what each list means for someone living in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati or Dayton.
- RN to BSN and Dual Enrollment: Ohio is listed. Courses are online in 8-week sessions, and
NURS 4450is completed at an Ohio community site you secure. - NP programs (MSN tracks, RN to MSN, Post-Graduate NP Certificate): Ohio is not among the 14 states, so Ohio residents fall outside the applicant pool.

Setting up NURS 4450 from Ohio
NURS 4450 stands alone among RN to BSN courses in carrying contact hours in a practice setting, and it comes late in the degree. You choose and secure the community site. Faculty at UCCS judge its fit for public health nursing, and two places never qualify: the unit you work on and any inpatient acute unit. Nothing counts until the clinical education agreement carries every signature.
The enrollment checklist has one cutoff per entry term, October 1 (spring), March 1 (summer) and May 1 (fall), and it gathers the prerequisites, the attestation and Intent to Apply, a myClinicalExchange account, a CastleBranch background check with a 10-panel drug screen, a badge photo and the site sheet naming your Ohio site and mentor. Miss the checklist date and there is no permission number to register that term, so finish the Ohio site search before the deadline arrives.
What Ohio law says about programs based elsewhere
Nothing in the Ohio Revised Code asks a nursing program from another state to seek the Board's approval or even notify it. Section 4723.32 carves out student exemptions for pre-licensure students whose program is approved by a board belonging to NCSBN, and for APRN students working under an APRN whom the program uses as faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. An RN to BSN student already holds an RN license, so the practical question is simply which license.
Ohio's compact membership began on January 1, 2023. The Ohio Board explains that a nurse holds a single multistate license from the primary state of residence and practices across compact states on it, and it publishes reporting on nurses who work in Ohio under another state's multistate license. For someone living in Ohio, the current home-state license UCCS expects before NURS 4450 is therefore an Ohio one.
Ohio metros and health systems
Columbus, Cleveland and the Ohio share of the Cincinnati metro are close in size, with Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek next. Bon Secours Mercy Health in Cincinnati, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth in Columbus, University Hospitals in Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic are among the large systems, and the Ohio Department of Health leads public health. They are examples, not UCCS sites, and faculty still review every community setting you propose.
For Ohio nurses weighing an NP
UCCS's NP programs take applicants only from 14 listed states, where all clinical and didactic work must be completed. UCCS reads residency as physical location, so the path would begin with a genuine move to one of those states, and moving partway through a program raises its own issues, covered on moving during the program. For NP practice in Ohio itself, AANP classes the state as reduced practice: an Ohio NP works under a standard care arrangement for life, signed with a collaborating physician or podiatrist, and Schedule II prescribing carries limits that depend on the setting.

Questions UCCS students ask
Must the Ohio nursing board sign off on UCCS before NURS 4450?
Ohio law asks nothing of that kind from programs based in other states, and you take the course as an RN already licensed in Ohio. UCCS faculty approve the site itself, and a clinical education agreement between UCCS and the site must be executed before your contact hours begin.
Is NURS 4450 online or in person?
UCCS describes it both ways. The RN to BSN FAQ calls the program fully online, NURS 4450 included, while the catalog lists the public health clinical as an exception to online delivery. The coursework runs online and the contact hours take place at your Ohio community site, so confirm the details with your advisor.
My multistate license was issued by another state before I moved to Ohio. Does it count?
Compact licenses follow the holder's primary residence, as the Ohio Board itself explains. Once Ohio is home, the license UCCS needs to see is Ohio's, so settle that with the Ohio Board before your checklist deadline. Could I take UCCS's NP programs after moving west?
A genuine relocation to one of the 14 listed states, such as Colorado, Arizona or Texas, would make you an in-state applicant there; UCCS decides admission. NP hours then happen where you live, at sites you find. The approved states overview lists every state.
