California nurses in UCCS's online NP programs
California residents may apply to UCCS's online nurse practitioner programs, and the Board of Registered Nursing names UCCS on its page of out-of-state NP programs approved for clinical placements in the state. What you still bring is a California RN license and preceptors who satisfy both UCCS's standards and the BRN's.

Where California fits in UCCS's lists
California is one of 14 states whose residents UCCS admits to its NP programs and one of 21 for the RN to BSN. The college expects clinical hours to take place where you live, so a Californian's rotations are California rotations.

UCCS on the BRN's out-of-state list
The governing regulation is 16 CCR 1486. Its terms for a school outside California: win the BRN's approval before any placement, use preceptors the board would accept, align with national NP education standards from NONPF and AACN, and cover California NP law, with standardized procedures among the topics.
UCCS is on the BRN's roster of approved programs from other states under three headings: family, psychiatric-mental health and adult-gerontology. Beside each, the board shows an estimate of one California enrollee a year. Ask UCCS early what that estimate means for space.
Approval opens with the board's Verification of Clinical Practice Experience form, voted on when the board meets. After that, UCCS holds one NP Program Preceptor form per California preceptor in its files, next to the Affiliation Agreement and preceptor letter it drafts for each rotation.
A California RN license comes first
No compact membership here, and no pending bill to change that, so the California line is where out-of-state multistate licenses stop working. Subsection (d) of the same regulation makes a current California RN license a precondition for any clinical experience you do in the state as a student of an outside NP program, and the BRN wants that license again before it grants NP certification after graduation. UCCS's handbook points the same way for non-compact states, as the RN license guide explains.
AANP classes California as restricted: in some settings and for some procedures, NPs keep a standardized protocol agreement, and exemptions can apply. UCCS's licensure disclosure says its curriculum meets California's educational requirements for APRN licensure.

Four metros and the systems inside them
California's size means a preceptor search looks very different in each region. Among the biggest employers are Kaiser Permanente (Oakland headquarters, two California regions), Sutter Health in the northern and central counties, and the six academic systems grouped as University of California Health. Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and Stanford Health Care complete the familiar list. Every practice, large system or small office, still goes through UCCS's agreement before an hour counts.

Questions UCCS students ask
Has the California BRN approved UCCS for NP clinicals?
UCCS appears on the BRN's roster of approved NP programs based in other states, for its family, psychiatric and adult-gerontology tracks. That approval concerns clinical placement in California. Admission remains UCCS's decision, so check with the college about your eligibility.
I hold a multistate license from Arizona. Does it cover California hours?
It does not. California stands apart from the compact, and the BRN's NP regulation requires out-of-state NP students to be California-licensed RNs before any clinical work. Get it well before your first UCCS rotation so it is in hand when your Clinical Site Sheet goes in.
Can I take UCCS's RN to BSN from California?
Yes. The RN to BSN's 21 states include California, and the program's clinical course, NURS 4450, happens at a California community site you secure and faculty approve. The BRN publishes no separate approval step for RN to BSN programs from other states. The NURS 4450 guide walks through UCCS's checklist.
Does California's restricted practice status matter for my rotation?
It shapes how your NP preceptor works: in some settings and procedures, California NPs practice under a standardized protocol agreement. The BRN also requires out-of-state programs to teach California NP law, standardized procedures included, so the rules your preceptor follows are part of what you learn.
Does SARA cover UCCS students in California?
UCCS takes part in SARA through WICHE, but its registrar notes that California is not a SARA member state. For NP clinical placements, California's approval step is the BRN listing described above. The registrar's State Authorization and Professional Licensure page is where to confirm anything else.
