Alabama nurses and UCCS: reading the state lists

UCCS takes online nurse practitioner and RN to BSN students only from the states it names, and Alabama is not among them. A nurse in Birmingham or Mobile would first need a home in an approved state, where you arrange your own preceptor close to home.

Where Alabama stands with each UCCS program

UCCS publishes a 14-state list for graduate NP study and a 21-state list for the RN to BSN, and Alabama misses both. The approved states guide quotes both lists.

Nursing practice under Alabama's rules

The Alabama Board of Nursing licenses RNs and APRNs. Alabama entered the Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2020, so plenty of its nurses carry a multistate license, though the APRN Compact has not passed there.

AANP rates Alabama as reduced practice. NPs keep a formal collaborative arrangement with a physician covering part of their work, under joint nursing and medical board oversight. Colorado and most of UCCS's western states earn a full practice rating by the same yardstick.

Birmingham leads the metro list, ahead of Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery. UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, Infirmary Health, USA Health and Montgomery's Baptist Health rank among the major systems.

Alabama's paperwork for schools based elsewhere

Rule 610-X-3-.09 puts an out-of-state prelicensure or advanced practice program on a clock: its intent letter and approval packet must reach the ABN no later than 15 days ahead of any clinical experience, naming the students, their supervisors and the facility. A yearly program fee applies too, and the ABN bars students from Alabama clinicals until both are settled.

RN to BSN, MSN and DNP students training in the state need an Alabama license or a multistate one, as do faculty who teach Alabama students beyond 30 days in a year. With Alabama absent from UCCS's list, none of this reaches a UCCS student.

Through the tax code, the Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, run by the statewide AHEC office, credits uncompensated community preceptors in rural shortage areas, but only for rotations tied to programs based inside Alabama.

Moving to a listed state before you apply

Florida borders Alabama and sits on UCCS's NP list, as do Texas and the western states. Settle in one, meet UCCS's admission rules, and you apply as that state's resident; UCCS reads residence as where you physically live. A move after admission can derail finishing, so read moving during the program first.

Once enrolled, you secure a preceptor near your new home, UCCS vets the site and drafts the Affiliation Agreement and preceptor letter, and hours count only after its "good to go" email. Your license has to fit the state where you train, which the license guide explains.

Questions UCCS students ask

Is UCCS's online FNP open to someone in Alabama?

Only after a move. UCCS draws NP applicants from its 14 listed states, and Alabama is absent. Relocate to a listed state such as Florida first and you apply as its resident. The list has shifted before (Kansas was on it in 2023), so check the current version with UCCS.

Could I live in Florida and log UCCS hours at a clinic in Mobile?

No. UCCS counts practicum hours only in states on its website list, and hours outside your home state also need the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator's approval. Alabama is not listed, so a Mobile clinic would not count toward a UCCS course even for a Florida resident.

Will my Alabama multistate license cover clinicals after I move?

UCCS's handbooks pair hours in a compact state with a multistate license and hours elsewhere with that state's own RN license. A move changes your home state, so confirm with the new state's board which license you should hold, and with UCCS before your first rotation.

Does UCCS's licensure disclosure cover Alabama?
