Louisiana nurses weighing UCCS's online programs

A Louisiana address rules out UCCS's online nursing programs for now: the college admits NP students from 14 named states and RN to BSN students from 21, and Louisiana is on neither roster. LSBN's rule for programs based elsewhere

Louisiana sets one of the stricter bars for schools headquartered elsewhere, and its rule, LAC 46:XLVII.3539, reaches graduate programs as well as undergraduate ones. Before a school from another state teaches or places students in Louisiana, the state board must sign off, and six months is the minimum lead for that request. The filing lists each agency and unit to be used and packs in the curriculum, syllabi, faculty paperwork and exam results; a yes lasts as long as three years.

Instructors working in Louisiana for such a school must be licensed there, hold a nursing degree above the bachelor's level and bring at least two clinical years. Each graduate clinical experience also goes on a Board spreadsheet within its first two weeks. UCCS confines hours to the states it lists, so none of this would touch a UCCS student, though it helps when comparing online programs that do place students in Louisiana.

Licensing and practice in Louisiana

Compact membership took effect in Louisiana in mid-2019. AANP files the state under reduced practice: each NP works within a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician that governs at least one part of practice. On UCCS's APRN licensure disclosure, Louisiana reads "meets" for curriculum, which speaks to coursework rather than enrollment.

Your RN years here likely ran through Ochsner Health, LCMC Health, Baton Rouge General, Willis-Knighton Health or FMOL Health, in Shreveport-Bossier City, Lafayette, Baton Rouge or the New Orleans-Metairie area. That background comes with you; a UCCS preceptor, though, is licensed in the state you move to.

Texas and the other listed states

Texas shares Louisiana's western border, appears on both UCCS lists and, like Louisiana, belongs to the compact. After the move, the search for hours is yours: UCCS says primary care and psychiatric hours are found by the student where they reside, then the college processes a Clinical Site Sheet, signs an Affiliation Agreement and clears you to start. Commuting into Texas from a Louisiana home does not create Texas residency for UCCS, which looks at where you physically live.

Questions UCCS students ask

Can a Louisiana nurse apply to UCCS's PMHNP track?

Not while living in Louisiana. The PMHNP track follows the same 14-state rule as the family and adult-gerontology tracks, and UCCS adds that psychiatric students may use only providers in approved states, even over telehealth. After relocating you would apply as a resident of your new state, with admission decided by UCCS.

Would UCCS need LSBN approval for my clinicals?

LAC 46:XLVII.3539 governs programs placing students in Louisiana, and UCCS keeps its hours in listed states. A UCCS student living in Texas or another listed state would do hours there, under that state's rules rather than Louisiana's.

Could I finish UCCS clinical hours back in Louisiana?

No. UCCS allows hours only in states on its website list, with Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator approval for any state other than your permanent residence. Louisiana is not on that list, so a Louisiana clinic would not count toward a UCCS course.

Does the Louisiana compact license matter for UCCS?
