Practice and licensing in Maryland

Maryland has issued compact licenses since January 2018, and its regulations let a nurse with a multistate privilege practice there under Maryland law. AANP lists the state as full practice, with each new NP first declaring a year and a half of mentoring by a physician or a certified NP. Graduate APRN students in an accredited program are exempt from Maryland licensure while they practice within it.

For schools based elsewhere, research found no Board of Nursing step before clinicals in Maryland. Outside institutions enrolling Maryland residents online must register with the Higher Education Commission unless they take part in SARA, as UCCS does through WICHE. The limit a Maryland resident meets comes from UCCS's own admission list rather than from state regulation.

Thinking about a return to Maryland

Before MBON certifies anyone as an advanced practice nurse, it reviews the NP program that person finished; if the program is absent from the Board's approved list, the approval form comes from the school rather than from you. This guide did not check whether UCCS is on that list, so raise it with MBON and UCCS before counting on a Maryland return. UCCS's licensure disclosure marks Maryland "meets" for curriculum, a separate question from Board approval; the disclosure guide explains the difference.

Maryland also rewards NPs and physicians who precept NP students unpaid in a Board-approved preceptorship, through its Nurse Practitioner Preceptorship Tax Credit. To qualify, a preceptor completes three or more community-based rotations of at least 90 hours in shortage areas named by the state health department, and the credit is scheduled to end in mid-2030. UCCS rotations happen in listed states, so the credit shapes Maryland's own preceptor market instead.

Relocating, then studying where you live

Most Marylanders live around Baltimore-Columbia-Towson or in the state's share of greater Washington, with smaller hubs at Hagerstown and Lexington Park. Nursing years with Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health, Luminis Health, LifeBridge Health or the University of Maryland Medical System travel with you; the UCCS preceptor practices in your new state.

After the move, UCCS's model is local: you secure a primary care or psychiatric preceptor near your new home, UCCS vets the site and executes an agreement, and hours start only once the college confirms you are cleared. Questions UCCS students ask

Can I do UCCS's FNP program while working in Maryland?

Not while you live there. UCCS admits MSN applicants only from 14 listed states, and residency means where you physically live rather than where your license was issued, so a Maryland multistate license does not change the answer. After moving to a listed state you could apply as its resident, with admission decided by UCCS.

Does living in Virginia instead of Maryland change anything?

For the RN to BSN, yes: Virginia is one of its 21 states, so a Virginia resident may apply and complete NURS 4450 at a community site that UCCS faculty approve. For the NP programs, no, because Virginia is not among the 14 NP states. The Virginia guide has the details.

Could my Maryland employer host my UCCS clinical hours?

No. UCCS permits hours only in its listed states, and even there a student's own employer qualifies only at a different location or unit, with the Graduate Clinical Practicum Coordinator's approval. A Maryland site falls outside the lists entirely.

How far ahead should I plan the move before applying?

UCCS evaluates you as a resident of the state you lived in when you applied, so the move comes first. Leave time to settle and to obtain the RN license your new state calls for, then give the preceptor search a runway of three to six months before your first practicum.
